Zanthoxylum americanum (Toothache Tree/Prickly Ash)
Zanthoxylum americanum, commonly known as the Toothache Tree or Prickly Ash, is a deciduous shrub native to North America. It is a member of the citrus family and has thorny branches with aromatic leaves. The plant produces small clusters of yellowish-green flowers in the spring, followed by red berries in the fall. The bark and leaves of Z. americanum have a numbing effect when chewed, hence the common name Toothache Tree.
