Pinus virginiana (Scrub/Virginia/Spruce Pine)
Pinus virginiana, commonly known as Scrub Pine, Virginia Pine, or Spruce Pine, is a species of pine tree native to the eastern United States. It is a small to medium-sized evergreen conifer with an irregular, open crown, and thick red-brown bark that becomes scaly with age. The needles are long, stiff, and usually occur in pairs. The cones are small, brown, and persist on the tree for several years. This tree is commonly found in dry, sandy soils and is an important source of food and cover for wildlife.
