Carya laciniosa (Shellbark Hickory)

The Shellbark Hickory is a large deciduous tree that can reach heights of 60-80 feet. It has a narrow, upright growth habit and produces large, edible nuts that have a thick shell. The tree gets its name from the distinctive, shaggy bark that peels away in plates or scales, similar to the shell of a turtle. It is commonly found in hardwood forests and riparian areas.
