Carya cordiformis, commonly known as Bitternut or Swamp Hickory, is a large deciduous tree native to North America. It belongs to the Juglandaceae family. The tree can grow up to 50-75 feet tall and has a spreading crown. The leaves are pinnately compound and turn a vibrant yellow color in the fall. The nuts produced by Bitternut Hickory are quite bitter and are not typically consumed by humans.
