Acer spicatum (Mountain Maple)

Acer spicatum, commonly known as Mountain Maple, is a shrubby understory tree that can reach a height of 10 to 25 feet. It is native to North America and is primarily found in cool, moist environments. The leaves of the Mountain Maple are opposite, toothed, and palmately lobed, turning vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall. This species is known for its smooth, gray bark and clusters of small, greenish-yellow flowers that appear in the spring.
